Canada Immigration: Family Class

The Family Class program in Canada allows individuals who are foreign nationals to be selected as members based on their relationship to either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. Canadian citizens (including those residing abroad with the intention of returning to Canada) and permanent residents who are 18 years of age or older may sponsor the following family members under the Family Class program (subject to meeting eligibility requirements) for immigration to Canada:

  • Spouse
  • Common-law/same-sex partner
  • Conjugal partner
  • Dependent children under age nineteen (19)
  • Dependent children age nineteen (19) and over (if they are mentally or physically disabled and dependent on their parent(s))
  • Children who adopted or to be adopted by them, or under their guardianship of the sponsor
  • parents
  • grandparents
  • Other prescribed family members (i.e. last remaining family member under humanitarian and compassionate grounds where it is warranted).

To determine if you or your relative qualifies for Canadian Permanent Residence under the Family Class program, you can complete a free Canada Immigration Eligibility Assessment specific to sponsoring a spouse, partner, or dependent child, as well as sponsoring a parent or grandparent.

Alternatively, the Government of Canada offers the "Parent and Grandparent Super Visa" as an option for parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. This multiple-entry visa is valid for up to 10 years and allows applicants to stay in Canada for up to 24 months at a time without needing to renew their status. Citizenship and Immigration Canada aims to issue these visas, on average, within 8 weeks of the application. This means that instead of waiting for up to 8 years, parents or grandparents can come to Canada within 8 weeks. It is mandatory for Parent and Grandparent Super Visa applicants to obtain private Canadian health-care insurance for their stay in Canada.
