Temporary Resident Visa (Visitor Visa)


A temporary resident visa (also known as a visitor visa) is a document that is attached to your passport and confirms that you meet the requirements to enter Canada.

Eligibility for Tourist Visa to Canada

To apply for a tourist visa to enter Canada, you must meet certain requirements:

• Possess a valid travel document, such as a passport
• Have acceptable health status.
• Have no criminal record or not be inadmissible to Canada.
• Convince the immigration officer that you have ties such as work, home, financial assets or family that will return you to your home country.
• Convince the immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.
• Have enough money to support yourself and your companions in Canada. The required amount of money depends on the duration of your stay in Canada and your accommodation arrangements.
• In some cases, you may need a medical examination or an invitation from someone living in Canada.
• To receive a parent's super visa, the applicant's child must meet specific financial income requirements.

Inadmissible Persons

Some individuals may not be allowed to enter Canada due to various reasons, such as criminal activities, anti-human rights activities, organized criminal activities, or health, financial, or security grounds.

Documents Required for a Tourist Visa to Canada

• A valid passport
• Bank statements for the last six months before submitting the application
• Valid real estate or business documents showing ties to the country of residence
• An invitation letter, valid financial documents, and residence status documents of the inviting person if someone invites you to visit
• A letter from the employer with a description of the employment conditions if the applicant is employed by a company
• Business registration and financial documents if the applicant is self-employed
• Salary, benefits, bank account statements, and other documents showing ties to the country of residence if the applicant is retired
• A letter of registration from the university or school if the applicant is a student
• Marriage certificates (if applicable)
• Translation of all documents not in English or French

Visa Validation and Period of Stay

A tourist visa is typically issued for multiple entries for a maximum of 10 years or up to the expiration date of the applicant's passport, whichever comes first. A person with a tourist visa can stay in Canada for a maximum of six months each time they enter Canada, unless a specific date is stamped on their passport by the immigration officer at the port of entry.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

A Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit for up to 2 years. The visa is valid for multiple entries for a maximum period of 10 years, and to be eligible for a Super Visa, the applicant must:

• Be the parent, grandmother, or grandfather of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
• Have a signed letter from their child or grandchild inviting them to Canada that includes a promise of financial support for the duration of the visit, a list and number of family members, and a copy of the person's residence documents
• Have health insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is valid for at least 1 year from the date of arrival, has coverage of at least $100,000, and proof of health insurance premiums
• Apply for a Super Visa from outside Canada
• Be eligible to enter Canada
• Perform an immigration medical examination
• Meet other conditions

Dependents cannot be included in this application and the child or grandchild inviting the applicant must prove that their family meets the minimum income required.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. The ETA is electronically linked to a traveler's passport and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. need an ETA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport and must present.
